lost

ok, so brad and i didn't get lost but we did backpack in the "lost wilderness" this past weekend. it was pretty sweet but we are both pretty exhausted from carrying huge packs. lost wilderness is about 2hours s.w. from denver...we drove right past where my parents got married so it was pretty sweet to show brad that. we then had to turn off the nice smooth highway on to a forest road...which we didnt realize is just a dirt road. we had to travel on the forest road for a half hour and it was the bumpiest road i have ever been on. i was relieved to finally find the trailhead. however, it was a sad drive because the road went straight through the forest that was destroyed by a massive forest fire in 2002. it destroyed 138,000 acres and is the largest recorded fire in colorado history. fortunately, the fire didn't reach where we were hiking but we did have to hike about 1/4 a mile through the burnt area at the beginning of the trip.

beginning of the hike though the burnt forest

the area we hiked is fairly unique to colorado, some say it is more like utah's landscape with huge rock formations dotting the landscape.

this was our lunch spot!

there were huge groupings of rock formations throughout our hike and this is the one we chose to explore.

me, inside exploring (would you expect anything else?)

me, falling down the crevice that the rain runoff water created.

brad's great photographic eye

brad and i posing with the huge rocks. ha.

we had to climb down this sketchy makeshift tree bridge to see the amazing view in the picture below.

what a great view!

our camp spot. we were probably too close to the water and we were in a pretty dangerous location if there was to be a massive downpour but we decided to take the chance, plus all the other good spots were taken (and i thought this place was going to be pretty secluded...i was wrong)
muscle man breaking a HUGE stick

getting a necessary drink towards the end of our long trip. it was a great trip and we are now ready to take on longer more rugged trips with this first one under our belts. :)

I showed Grandmommy your pictures and she loved them. She was scared though when she saw some of the risky things you both did. She can't wait until you come to visit with Brad...hurry up. She liked the birthday card and the special note. Love, MOM and GRANDMOMMY
